Former Finance Minister, Dr. Stephen Amoah has thrown support behind persons calling for investigations in funds allocated for the controversial National Cathedral project.
Dr. Amoah says although he is not against the execution of the project, he, like many others, is concerned about the controversies surrounding its funding. Therefore, he believes an investigation would be the right call.
“Honestly, I am not against the cathedral because I am a Christian, but I am with those who are raising concerns about how much has gone into our foundation.”
“I think that money should be investigated, and those raising concerns are right, even though I am a NPP member,” he said on JoyNews’ AM Show.
The National Cathedral project, which was started under the erstwhile government, is just a walking distance away from Ghana’s Parliament and the national event centre, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC). Dr. Amoah says the authorities should have considered a different location, as he believes the construction of another national edifice near those buildings is a problem.
“I personally think even the location is a problem. With the International Conference Centre and Parliament nearby, they should have considered a different location,” he said.
The source of funding for the controversial project has become a huge concern for the public at large, with rumours of embezzlement making waves. With the project currently stalled, many are calling for an investigation into the amount spent so far on the foundation stage. Moreover, amid the rumours of alleged irregularities concerning the project, many members of the board of trustees for the project have resigned.
Since the inception of the National Cathedral project, which started merely as a personal promise by former President Akuffo-Addo to God, citizens and many experts argued that such a project was unnecessary and that the funds could be used for more important things, such as addressing the infrustructure deficit plaguing hospitals and schools in the country.
With the project stalled, the new government said it is considering a variety of options concerning the way forward. There have been indications that the project could be turned into a huge health facility.
