Many are unsure what the fate of the current Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare would be under the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) led administration.
In Ghana’s politcal landscape, it has become customary that a change in government means a change in virtually every institution head.
Amid varying political discussions is the calls by some people for the removal of the IGP.
However, an immediate past member of the Council of State, also Senior lawyer Sam Okudzeto is unhappy about calls for the removal of the Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. According to him, the current IGP has done nothing wrong to warrant such calls. These calls are merely political, in that some people believe everything needs to change once there’s a change in government, he expressed.
The IGP has been facing opposition from even his own subbordinates. Some fourty officers have had to sue their boss for allegedly denying them promotion and allegedly preventing them from speaking to the media. This disgruntlement subsequently fueled their calls for his dismissal. But the case was dismissed by a Kumasi High court earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the IGP has been defended by others for his ways of carrying out his duties.
According to senior lawyer Okudzeto, the current IGP is the most levelheaded and strict person the country has ever had since independence.
“I don’t even understand what they are even driving at, I have watched this country since independence and if there has been any person who is levelheaded, and strict to do the right thing, it is the current IGP, Dr. Dampare.”
“I think that people just think that when there is a change of government, there must also be a change of everything. We cannot have continuity in the country like that. It makes no sense”. Mr. Okudzeto said.
Amid the calls for his removal, President Mahama has instructed the IGP to perform some important tasks, one of which borders on investigations into electoral violence in the 2020 election.
