Kwesi Pratt Jnr, the managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, has questioned the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) statements about how the country’s economy will do after the program.
He said that the IMF’s predictions about Ghana’s economy are wrong every time the country asks for a bailout, so leaders shouldn’t take them seriously.
During a live TV debate about the program’s conditions, he yelled, “Why are we wasting our time listening to these people?”
“I think these IMF employees think that Kwesi Pratt Jnr has questioned the credibility of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because he doesn’t believe their statements about the country’s economy. Kwesi Pratt Jnr has called into question the credibility of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) because of their statements about the country’s economy. “That’s how they sometimes act and what they talk about,” he exploded in anger.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr. said on the Metro TV show “Good Morning Ghana” that since 1983, when he first saw an IMF deal, none of their promises have come true, and the deals have also hurt the economy of Ghana.
“In 1983, I heard them say that Ghana is on the way to getting better and that every other country should do the same. Then, when President Kufuor was elected in 2000, the same people wrote him a letter saying that the economy had been completely destroyed. They then pushed President Kufuor to start HIPC and some adjustment programs, Kwesi Pratt Jnr said.

He went on to say, “When President Mills was elected in 2008, the same people (the IMF) wrote to him and told him that President Kufuor had ruined the economy. Same people, and you still want to listen to them? He yelled, “Why are we wasting our time listening to these people?”
He said that no country has ever come out of an IMF program with a strong economy, so Ghana going to the IMF is not the answer to all of its troubles.
