The vetting of presidential nominees for the various ministries began yesterday, January 13, 2025 with the Finance Minister-designate Dr. Cassel Ato Forson, the first of the nominees to be interviewed.
There have been sparks of conversations about tax scrapping promise made by President John Dramani Mahama during his campaign towards the 2024 election.
In addressing this issue, Dr. Forson, during the vetting, reiterated that the betting tax and E-levy will be scrapped in his first budget should he be appointed as the Minister for Finance.
Speaking before Parliament’s Appointment Committee, he stated, “I insist that the betting tax must be abolished, and as Finance minister, I will abolish it in my first budget because it has failed”. The finance minister-designate stressed on the inability of the betting tax to alleviate the country’s economic sector, explaining that it has rather burdened the sector with more debts instead of providing revenue.
When questioned on his plan to scrape the e-levy and his stance on how the tax has affected Ghana since its implementation, Dr. Forson stated, “My position on the e-levy is well known. I have written articles about it and my stance has not changed.”
Ghanaians are on the lookout to witness the scrapping of the betting tax and e-levy which were introduced during the administration of former President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo.
This is one of the many vetting of the presidential nominees yet to be done, in accordance with the constitutional provision of a transparent committee from parliament, vetting and approving nominees of the president, to hold certain positions under a new government.
