The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Malik Basintale has reiterated the Mahama led administration’s resolve to recover stolen and mismanaged government assets during the current Akuffo-Addo led government.
In an interview on Joy News’ AM Show, Mr. Basintale mentioned that Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) seeks to bring to account, all state officials who have mismanaged state properties, including contracts that were placed in their care.
“It is an operation that is going to recover and return all the loot taken by state officials under the NPP administration”, he said.
He mentioned that “ORAL means holding people accountable; people must be accountable for their actions and inactions – especially with state resources and properties” that were entrusted in their hands during the reign of the incumbent government. According to him, ORAL is a policy or a witch-hunt operation to recover all the loot – all the money that has gone down the drain through the corruption of state officials.
He claimed that the recovered loot will be used to build schools, make roads amongst others so Ghanaians will be witnesses to the use of the recovered money, stressing that the “loot” will be used to develop the the country as a whole.
In the interview, he acknowledged that Ghanaians have appreciated what corruption has done to the country, adding that should the NDC use the recovered money to implement projects and name them after the ORAL policy, “We will stay in power forever”.
In addressing the rationale behind the ORAL agenda, Malik emphasized that, “the people of this country need accountability. Ghanaians don’t demand so much. We are not saying that every morning the government should give us fried rice and chicken. We are not saying every morning the government should give us a bottle of whisky. We are not saying that every morning the government of Ghana should give us a bottle of coke. All we are saying is that do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.
”We cannot construct the roads for ourselves, construct the roads for us. We can’t build the hospitals for ourselves – build them for us. Give us access to good healthcare, give us access to good education. That’s all we are asking for and that is what the NDC seeks to do with the money recovered from through the ORAL policy.”
Malik Basintale’s remarks addresses the ongoing discussion of the 120 days of accountability and reshaping of the country’s economy that the President-elect, John Dramani Mahama mentioned he will implement in his first 120 days in office as Ghana’s President of the 4th Republic.
While a concerned majority argue that the operation will be difficult to implement, others are of the hope that this operation will help bring Ghana back to its former glory.
