The Member of Parliament for Nkwanta North, John Oti Bless said the Minority leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin should held responsible for the recent chaos witnessed during the vetting of nominees of President Mahama.
During his appearance before the committee probing the incident, John testified that he heard the minority leader give his colleague minority members of the committee orders to overturn the tables. This, he said exacerbated the situation. He appeared before the committee on Friday February 7, 2025.
According to him, the MPs who were seen distrupting proceedings by overturning tables and destroying microphones acted upon the instruction of their leader, Afenyo-Markin.
“Minority Chief Whip got involved based on the instruction of his leader, Afenyo Markin. I saw Afenyo telling them that they should all listen to him and take his instructions. He told them. That was when he got involved.”
Asked whether he himself had heard the Minority leader give such instructions, John emphasized “Mr. Chairman, I heard him. I was rightly close to them when they were talking.”
However the committee has stated that they have no video evidence to back such a claim, therefore such claims will be regarded as John Oti Bless’ witness statement.
A committee has been set up to ascertain evidence to hold accountable, MPs responsible for the chaos witnessed during vetting proceedings recently. The incident has been widely condemned, with the Speaker of Parliament poised to induce some level of punishment.
The speaker had had to suspend four MPs evidently seen in videos disrupting the process. However, upon pleas from both the minority and majority caucus on behalf of the suspended MPs, the speaker recently lifted the suspension.
He has, however, emphasized that the committee probing the issue will continue the process to ascertain evidence.
