The University of Ghana has reappointed the current vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo as the Vice-Chancellor for a second four-year term in the next academic year starting October 2025. The professor assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana in August, 2021. The decision was made by the Governing Council of the University of Ghana, in recognition of the Professor’s contribution towards the improvement of teaching and learning environment in the university during her first term.
As the first female vice-chancellor of the university, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo through her outstanding leadership has seen the implementation of projects such as the one-student-one-laptop (1S1L) initiative, which was implemented to improve students’ learning processes, as well as the creation of WIFI hotspots at various locations on the campus to improve access to the school WIFI.
Under her administration, classrooms across the University were renovated into modernized rooms which were to aid students make the most out of their lecture hours. It was also under her supervision that the Centre for Disability Studies and Advocacy (CEDSA) was created, to improve the experience of Persons With Disabilities (PWD) on the campus.
Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo is a Ghanaian linguist who obtained a Bachelor’s degree in French and Linguistics at the University of Ghana. She completed both her MPhil and PhD degrees in the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Before her appointment as the Vice-Chancellor for the University of Ghana, Professor Amfo was the Pro-Vice Chancellor for the Academic and Students Affairs at the University. Her commitment and dedication to the growth and improvement of the University of Ghana is obvious in the number of projects and initiatives implemented during her administration.
She is the first female Vice-chancellor of the University of Ghana, and serves as a beacon of hope for young women who seek to reach higher heights in society. She has received a number of awards in recognition of her impact and dedication to the development of both the University and other organisations. Some of the awards she has received include, the Ghana Woman of the Year for Excellence in Education Award from Glitz Africa in 2023.
