Two South African nationals and a Nigerian, all of whom are women, have been remanded into custody following accusations of smuggling methamphetamines, a narcotic drug into Ghana.
The matter which was adjudicated by an Accra High Court, ordered their remand following arrest of the three women by officials of the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) at the Kotoka International Airport. According to reports, the arrest was made on January 20, 2025.
The accused individuals reportedly made a plea bargain but were denied by the preciding judge, Mrs Kizita Koowa Quarshie on the ground that their charges have not been read out yet.
A senior State Attorney, Mr Watkins Adamah, the prosecution therefore beseeched the court to order a remand of the three women, as he also concludes on investigations.
“This morning, our prayer humbly is to cause the remand of first, second and third accused persons into the custody of the NACOC pending investigations,” he said.
The judge then issued a three-week remand order and asked the three accused women to reappear with their lawyers in court on February 11, 2025.
According to the prosecution’s account on the capture of the accused persons, the first and second persons, who are South African nationals travelled through Rwanda to Ghana with the narcotic drug concealed in indentical suitcases. They had planned to meet with the third accused, who was traveling from Nigeria to Ghana with similar suitcase.
“They were found in possession of identical suitcases which had over 16 kg methamphetamine, a narcotic drug, concealed in their suitcases.
“Controlled delivery involving the first and second accused led to the arrest of the third accused person, a Nigerian who had travelled from Nigeria to Ghana and she met first and second accused persons with similar suitcases to swap them for the narcotic drugs,” he explained.
Moreover, in order to ascertain its properties, the narcotic drug will be sent to the Ghana Standards Authority for examination.
