When Aleksander Ceferin, President of the Union of European Football Associations, tried to change his own rule, he was caught.
The Slovene is supposedly trying to change the rules so that he can stay in power until 2031.
When Ceferin took over as UEFA president from Michel Platini in 2016, he put in place a policy that all executive positions could only last three terms.
But he is now working hard to change that rule so that he can keep his job.
Ceferin could run for office again in 2027 if he wins. He was re-elected this year without a challenger.
David Gill is a member of Uefa’s executive committee and used to be the CEO of Manchester United. He is leading the resistance to any change.
Because of the change, any choice made before 2017 would not count toward the three allowed terms.
The issue was brought up at last week’s executive committee meeting. Gill is said to have become angry and said the plan was not fair. Others at the meeting spoke out against the plan as well, but it’s unclear whether Ceferin, who has a lot of support in Eastern Europe, has enough support from other groups to go ahead with his controversial plan.
The plan will be discussed at Uefa’s congress in Paris on February 8. To change the organization’s statutes, it needs to be approved by two-thirds of the 55 members present.
According to a statement released by Uefa on Monday, the legal committee suggested several changes to the statutes. These changes would make some existing provisions clearer so that none of them apply to the past, which is a basic legal concept. The changes were accepted by both the governance committee and the executive committee. Congress will now think about them in February.
