The Office of the President has demanded government institutions to submit payroll records of new staff.
A letter dated January 15, 2025, said the target records are those of persons who received appointment from December 7, 2024 under the previous administration.
Details of the records, per the directive, must indicate full name, designation, employee identification number (if applicable), date of appointment, and date added to the payroll of each new staff.
According to the letter signed by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, the directive is a part of ongoing efforts to ensure the integrity and accuracy of payroll records under the President Mahama’s administration.
Heads of state institutions are requested to make available the records no later than January 31, 2025.
Reports of ghost names on government payroll emerged in the heat up to the 2024 election. The said ghost names reportedly received monthly salaries from the government for no work. This news sparked public outrage and debates, as there were allegations that the ruling party put their party faithfuls on payroll without being officially employed.
Moreover, in December, the Akuffo-Addo government made new numerous appointments, although the government disclosed some time back that the public sector was chocked.
The government was heavily criticized, with the then opposition NDC flagbearer, now President John Dramani Mahama issuing firm assurance to terminate all such late appointments when he comes into power.
