Parliament has introduced some stringent security measures to safeguard proceedings today, as the Speaker of Parliament’s course of action is being closely monitored following a Supreme Court injunction order concerning some four seats previously declared vacant.
The House is gathering today, Tuesday October 22 as its next seating to deliberate on pending issues. A nationawide attention is on the House today as there is a heightened curiosity as to whether or not the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin will heed the Supreme Court’s injunction order.
According to a statement released on October 21, 2024 and signed by the Deputy Marshal of Parliament, “All MPs, Staff and members of the Press will be screened thoroughly before the entry into the Chamber.”
“Body Guards of MPs will not be permitted in the Chamber. Vehicles will not be allowed to park around the Grand Arena.”
“MPs are to be dropped at the designated drop-off zones within the precincts of AICC,” it added.
Meanwhile, the public will not be allowed access to the public gallery until further notice.

Last week, the Speaker declared four seats vacant following an indication through a parliamentary poll that the MPs of those seats have decided to go independent. The declaration immediately spelled a new order of power in the House, as the ruling NPP government became the minority.
Within hours, the aggrieved caucus resorted to legal action at the supreme court and secured an injunction order on the Speaker’s interpretation of the law. This sparked legal discourses on various platforms as to which of the two arms of government had the power to interpret the laws.
