Uganda’s President, Yuweri Musevini signed the anti-LGBTQ bill into law after Parliament thinned it down.
The law implies that acts of homosexuals are punishable by law in Uganda and anyone found guilty will be imprisoned. Gay s3x with someone below 18 years or a person with a disease such as HIV attracts a death penalty.
Uganda campaign groups have since come out to speak against the legislation saying it is discriminatory and violates the rights of LGBTQ people and are expected to set in motion a court action.
Meanwhile, the US has informed the government of Uganda of possible economic consequences if the legislation is enforced.
The UN and US stated that Uganda’s progress in dealing with HIV is in “grave jeopardy”.
