In a letter signed by the Spokesperson to the President, Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and circulated across the various media houses, President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) to conduct investigations into the operations of the National Service Authority.
The investigations stem from a discovery of up to 81,885 suspected ghost names which were on the payroll of the Authority, during the previous Akuffo-Addo-led government.
According to the communique, the ghost names were detected through a head count of active National Service personnel at the command of the Minister for Finance, as a prerequisite for the clearance of allowance arrears which date back to August 2024. Upon completion of the head count, the Ministry of Finance released a total amount of GHS 226,019,224, to cover the arrears for the current 98,145 National Service personnel.
The current figure of total active National Service Personnel is 81,885 less than the 180,030 names which were presented as active service personnel by the previous management of the Authority.
These names were also submitted for allowance payment in 2024. The President has also ordered the new management of the National Service Authority, to carry out reforms to establish adequate control to prevent a recurrence of the phenomenon of ghost names.
