President John Dramani Mahama has submitted documents to the Auditor-General, in a bid to officially declare his assets. This was carried out during a brief ceremony held at the Jubilee house Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
Meanwhile, following the declaration, President Mahama cautioned all appointees to follow suit, threathening to take necessary steps, including dismissal of appointees upon failure to do same.
“I wish to stress that any of my appointees failing to meet this deadline will face severe sanctions not excluding removal from office,” he warned.
According to Ghana’s Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998, (ACT 550), all public officials including the President, ministers and other state officials, are mandated to disclose their assets and liabilities to the public. The declaration of their assets must be done the moment they assume office, every four years and after they have left office. This aims to promote transparency and to prevent corruption of officials.
The declaration of the assets includes details of bank accounts, properties and financial interests. The President after his submission, has given all government appointees until March 31, 2025, to submit their declaration of assets and failure to do so may cause them to be dismissed from their posts.
The president has consistently expressed that his administration will not shield any act of corruption. Anyone found guilty of corruption will be made to face legal action and removal from office, according to President Mahama.
