Pictures of President Akuffo-Addo’s statue with a part of it broken are circulating on various social media platforms. A huge hole can be seen punched in the left foot of the statue, sparking controversies as the cause remains unknown.
On 6th November, 2024 citizens woke up to a surprise; the unveiling of the statue of the incumbent president of the 4th Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, in front of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital. This was met with series of criticisms, with many debating the relevance and rationale behind the raising of this statue.
Some supporters argued that the statue was a monument to honour the great works and projects that had been implemented under the Akuffo-Addo led administration in the Effia-Nkwanta area. However, others also argued that the statute was irrelevant as there had been little to no improvement in Ghana’s economy under President Akuffo-Addo’s reign.
There were sparks of debates and threats, where some residents who saw the statue as an eyesore in the community, threatened to take it down. Many citizens have been of the view that the statue was a symbol of misplaced priorities, in that there are important projects such as building of infrastructure and school, which could have been implemented with the money that was used to build the statue.
There have been various speculations that this is the work of some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who wanted to bring down the statue, as a form of celebration of their victory in the just ended December 7, 2024 election. Some also believe that it is the work of the residents who threatened to remove the statue. The speculations are endless as the perpetrators of this act are yet to be brought to light.
For some, the hole in the statue is a huge relief, while for others it symbolizes the defeat of the New Patriotic Party in the just ended 2024 elections. Others believe that this is a reflection of the feelings of Ghanaians towards the governance of the Akuffo-Addo led administration.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to find the cause of this defect.
