The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Members of Parliament have maintained their resolve to occupy the Majority side in parliament as the House resumes seating.
The NDC MPs who arrived in parliament as early as 8:30 AM were seen seating at the right-hand side, a place reserved for the caucus with the a greater number of representatives.
Meanwhile, the NDC MPs have also registered their frustration over what they describe as a lack of commitment by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), as their MPs could not be seen in parliament at the time.
“The governing side are not serious and we are here to do business and they triggered the provisions for the Speaker to recall us and so we thought they would have been here for us to do business but they are not here.
“We are not supposed to be in the Chamber by 10 am, we are supposed to be in the Chamber before 10 am and the Speaker comes in at 10 am and so if none of them are here, then it leads us to conclude that they are not serious about government business and they are wasting our time and the Ghanaian peoples time and they are making unnecessary requests and keeping us in Parliament when we have work to do in our constituencies,” said Joseph Bukari, the MP for Saboba.
Prior to today’s seating, the NDC had indicated their resolve to abide by the speaker’s declaration on some four seats vacant, a controversial vedict that turned the power tide into the hands of the opposition NDC in parliament.
“We will be attending upon the House as directed by the Speaker. We shall be taking our seats in the chamber in accordance with the Majority side which we are in Parliament,” MP for Adaklu Kwame Agbodza said.
However the decision on the four seats is still not recognised by the Supreme Court, as the case is yet to be determined finally following a lawsuit filed by the NPP caucus.
Meanwhile, the NDC has also called upon the NPP caucus to prioritise government businesses, expressing their willingness to support the NPP should they also cooperate.
“our advice is our minority NPP is to try and prioritise business that is in the interest of the people of this country, and they shall find favor and cooperation with us in trying to deal with those businesses.”
“We can assure them that as long as the business is in the interest of improving the lives of Ghanaians, they can count on the majority NDC caucus in Parliament to support those initiatives to pass those things that will help the people of this country,” Agbodza said.
The speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin had had to recall parliament into session following his suspension of same amid legal contentions on his decision of declaring the four seats vacant. Stakeholders bemoaned the ramifications of parliament closing down and requested its reopening in order not to stall some important government businesses.
The speaker finally recalled for seating after a-five-member delegate from the Council of State met him to discuss the recent issues facing parliament. In conclusion, the council assured the Mr. Bagbin their support in resolving the pending issues.
