A carefully conducted joint operation has led to the capturing of a counterfeit manufacturing group.
The operation, which was carried out in a form of a raid simultaneously was conducted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the Ghana Police Service, while acting on credible intelligence. Tema and Accra were the targeted areas.
The raid led to the successful confiscation of a large amount of fake monies reportedly worth Forty Million US Dollars ($40,000,000.00).
The seized counterfeit monies will be presented as evidence against the perpetrators, as authorities prepare to undertake legal actions.
Indications are that the OSP is extending the period of their investigation so as to ascertain the masterminds backing the operation.
“The production and circulation of counterfeit currency pose a grave threat to our economy and the trust placed in our financial systems. This operation represents a substantial blow to the network responsible for manufacturing such fake currency,” the OSP said.
The outfit has therefore advised individuals to report cases of counterfeit money production and other corruption related issues. It will continue to pursue justice and make perpetrators of the act face legal action, the OSP added.
This effort by the OSP forms part of its quest to eradicate corruption or reduce the canker to the minimum after coming under pressure for doing little in prosecuting especially top officials reportedly implicated in corruption related matters.
