Reports monitored by the DeHOTPRESS MEDIA reveal a hostile incident involving two New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates during their campaign tour in the Central Region.
The incident involved supporters of Cynthia Morrison and rival candidate, Chris Arthur from the same party looking to secure a seat in parliament in the upcoming election in December.
The clash occurred around 9Am when the two aspirants were on a campaign tour at Agona Nyarkrom in the Central Region.
Alongside Chris was his campaign manager Haruna Rashid who was reportedly shot in the wake of gun-fires involving supporters of Cynthia Morrision. Haruna, who is also the Agona West NPP coordinator, is reported to be in critical condition following the incident.
Reports say Chris’ convoy had ran into a roadblock allegedly created by Cynthia Morrison’s supporters. This resulted into increased tensions. In an attempt to change direction, gunshots were directed at Chris’ convoy leading to Haruna being shot in the rib.
According to Chris, they were too late in their attempt to change direction.
In Chris’ accounts on the incident, unidentified men approached his driver and poured alcohol on him, leading him losing control. All the while, two others attacked his campaign manager and shot him.
Haruna was reportedly rushed to the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital before later being transferred to the Kole Bu Teaching Hospital for intensive care.
Three other supporters of Chris have sustained injuries as well as two of Cynthia’s as a result of the clash. They are said to also be receiving treatments.
The incident has sinced been condemned by the Agona West NPP Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Jibri Tanko. He has admonished supporters to avoid intimidations.
“We will not allow anyone to intimidate us in this election,” he stated firmly.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that investigation on the incident is still in progress.
Cythia Morrison was one of four MPs whose seats were declared vacant following a poll in parliament which revealed they have decided to go independent. The speaker of parliament said these people have no business in parliament following their decision, according to his interpretation of the law.
The rule has affected the Majority caucus in parliament, as their numbers reduced. Dissatisifed with the speaker’s order, the majority, now minority, resulted to legal action at the supreme court where it secured an injunction order on the speaker’s decision.
Following the seeming chaos regarding parliament and further suspension of parliamentary proceedings until further notice by the speaker, Cynthia Morrison, recently disclosed that she has rescinded her decision to become an independent candidate.
This came following social media buzz about her suddenly appearing together in pictures with NPP MPs, raising curiosity amongst political enthusiasts.
