The New Patriotic Party (NPP) have decided to no longer appear on any media platform belonging to the Media General.
The party’s communication directorate cited bias, unprofessionalism and abusive moderation by hosts as reasons for their decision.
Acccording to a press statement dated January 26, 2025, despite the media house’s assurance to address their concerns, no improvement has been seen. The decision is said to have been reached following months of engagement with management, hosts and production team of the media house.
“We announce that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) withdraws from all Media General platforms. This decision comes after months of engagement with the production team, hosts and management of Media General to address concerns regarding unprofessional, biased and abusive moderation by its host.”
“Despite repeated assurances since 2023, the observed misconduct and unfairness persist,” the statement read.
It added that though a withdrawal was not their preferred resort, the management’s position on the issue compels them to make such a decision.
Citing instances of their allegations, the statement made reference to a scenario where “a regular gues known for making inflammatory remarks recently directed another insult towards former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on a programme hosted by Madam Keminni Amanor.”
The host allegedly did not object to the misconduct of the person in question, according to the press release.
Moreover, the party has claimed that the media house’s bias can be seen also through its paneling, where it allegedly assembles three or four persons “whose political affiliation and orientation are publicly known to favor one party against a single representative from the NPP.”
In conclusion, the party hopes that the Media General would “shed their current activist stance and work towards becoming a balanced platform that serves the information needs of Ghanaians rather than seeking to instruct Ghanaians on what to think and schemes to harass the NPP.”
Background
The NPP has consistently accused the Media General of being a pro-NDC platform. In a most recent develoment, precisely in Ghana’s heat-up to the 2024 election, the media house has had to issue an appology to the party over allegations of mockery of their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia depicted in a cartoon post. This was related to a nurses trainee allowance issue.
“We retract and apologize for the depiction of the NPP flagbearer in the said publication or any related unsavory comments made on any of our platforms in recent times.”
“As a responsible media organization, we value fairness, accuracy, and respect in our reporting and content creation,” a portion of the appology said.
However, the party was dissatisfied by the appology, as they argued that it did not seem sincere.
