The newly sworn-in Attorney General, also Minister of Justice, Dominic Akurutinga Ayine is discontinuing a legal case against Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested in 2024.
Amongst these protesters are Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a legal practitioner and convener of the Fixthecountry movement and Elorm Ama Governor-Ababio, popular lgbtq advocate, both of whom have been consistent critics of the government led by former President Akuffo-Addo.
The two were arrested together with several others during a protest to call for accelerated efforts in addressing pressing issues such as illegal mining and hush economic conditions. Protesters were arrested and granted bail later.
However, Oliver Barker-Vormawor was initially denied bail over a pending treason charge stemming from his comments sometime ago, which had been interpreted as inciting a coup.
The development was met with public outrage, with many calling for the arrested individuals to be set free.
A nolle prosequi (not to wish to prosecute) filed by the A.G will in effect discontinue the legal process, thereby setting those facing the legal action free.
