The Acting Director of the National Service Scheme, Mr. Felix Gyamfi, speaking on Joy FM’s PM Express, has announced that starting today, Thursday, February 13, 2025, all outstanding national service allowance arrears will be paid in full.
This directive, according to him, was given by President John Dramani Mahama.
The acting director confirmed that the payments from August to December which have been delayed will be paid in full. He said, “From tomorrow, service personnel will start receiving all arrears due them, from I think all the way from August, September, October, November and December.”
He also mentioned that the reason for the recurrence of payment delays is as a result of corruption and lack of transparency in the system, in the past eight years.
Expressing his disappointment in the recurring event of delayed payments, he lamented, ” Why has it become so? I think in the last eight years, it all became part of humongous corruption, the incompetence we had to deal with because you didn’t understand why a service person’s meagre allowance due them will not be paid on time.”
Mr. Gyamfi hinted that President John Dramani Mahama is concerned with improving the condition of service personnel. In addressing concerns on the suggested increase in the current allowance, he revealed that it was in the pipeline, and the President was thinking about it.
“I think President Mahama understands the circumstances that we are in and has reduced the corruption, the thievery and the scheme by that much. And I’m sure already he is thinking about, okay, can we claw back some of the money we saved? So, it’s in the pipe a little bit. I’m sure he’s thinking about it,” he said.
The Acting Director believes that due to the recent focus on efficiency and anti-corruption measures, there will be a change in the payment system, to make it more efficient and put a stop to the recurrence of delayed allowance payments.
Delay in the payment of allowance to service personnel has become a norm, causing many service personnel, discomfort and facing financial strain. The payment of this backlog allowances comes as a relief to these young patriots who have decided to serve the country.
