The King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the government of Ghana to adopt his approach in addressing the issue of illegal mining.
While acknowledging the government’s efforts in combating unlawful mining, the individual maintains that further actions may be taken to address the issue.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu made this statement during his address at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
The individual expressed that there was a recent occurrence wherein actions were undertaken against certain chiefs within their kingdom who were found to be engaged in galamsey operations, either discreetly or openly. They also implored the government to reciprocate these efforts in the ongoing battle against galamsey.
The individual emphasized the government’s responsibility in safeguarding natural resources such as land and water bodies.
The monarch of the Ashanti Kingdom issued a call for the implementation of sustainable development endeavors aimed at assisting communities impacted by the Akosombo floods in their efforts to reconstruct and prosper amidst challenging circumstances.
