Award-winning journalist, Manasseh Azure Awuni has advised the BuzStopBoys, to reject any assistance from the popular cleaning agency in Ghana – Zoomlion, under the Jospong group of companies.
BuzStopBoys is a volunteer cleaning group which emerged in 2024 to take-up the task of cleaning the country’s capital, Accra, following what many have described as shoddy work from the Zoomlion, which was contracted by the government to superintend over cleanliness of towns and proper waste disposal.
According to Manasseh, he has been alerted by an anonymous person, about a meeting between some Ghanaian bloggers/influencers, Zoomlion and its CEO, regarding a possible cooperative work amongst the parties.
The journalist has been raising issues against the activities of the Jospong group, with many of them bordering on corruption related topics. He fears the BuzStopBoys’ genuine efforts to ensuring sanity in the country could be jeopardized should they agree to work with Zoomlion.
“I call on BuzStopBoys to reject Zoomlion’s support. Don’t allow Zoomlion to take credit for your work. Our so-called leaders should do the sensible thing by giving resources to those who can do the job and not those who rely on bloggers and social media hype while the country remains filthy,” he said.
He alleged that during the governance of former President Kuffour, some billions of cedis siphoned from various ministries, were given to multiple Jospong companies, mainly Zoomlion, to assist in the sanitation situation of the state. He also alleged that many of these contracts which were signed between the then government and Zoomlion were tainted with corruption. He also mentioned that the politicians refuse to cut the monopoly of Zoomlion with the excuse that the company has the resources to keep the country clean.
According to him, the City and Country Waste and other well-established sanitation companies were sidelined in 2006, with many “shady” sanitation contracts, awarded to Zoomlion, however, Zoomlion had no equipment and resources to compete in proposing the contracts. He lamented that if any of the other sanitation companies had gained the resources which were handed over to Zoomlion, they would have been very resourceful.
He revealed that the BuzStopBoys which is made up of a group of young men who have the willingness to keep Accra clean, have their work appearing more impactful than Zoomlion, “which makes hundreds of millions every year from sanitation contracts.” He shared a video which has the CEo of Zoomlion, Elder Joseph Siaw Agyepong, in a meeting with Ghanaian bloggers, discussing the BuzStopBoys. According to him, Zoomlion intends to donate to them, and wants the bloggers to publicise it.
The journalist has proposed that the various assemblies be given back their resources to manage sanitation, instead of the government channeling the funds to Zoomlion. He also advised that if the assemblies need services, they can hire cleaning groups such as BuzStopBoys, to help them. Sanitation in Ghana is a huge problem, and Accra, the capital of Ghana, experiences severe floods and breakout of diseases when there are slightly heavy rains.

There was a promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa. But this promise remain unfulfilled, as improper waste disposal in the country, especially in big cities worsen. The situation continue to cause dangerous flooding incidents during rainy seasons.
