President John Dramani Mahama has issued a statement indicating a reduction in the number of government ministries under his administration.
This directive underscores his campaign promise to cut down on government size, an approach to reduce government expenditure.
As a result of this directive, a number of ministries created under the Akuffo-Addo led government have been merged.
A statement dated January 9, 2025 signed by the President says the President’s authority to take such course of action is backed by provisions of section 11(3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D.C.L. 327).

The previous government was subjected to severe criticisms for creating ministries many regarded unnecessary, as it took a toll on government’s expenditure. The New Patriotic Party led government worked with about 123 ministers, sparking debates on former President Akuffo-Addo’s competence.
During his campaign tours, the newly sworn-in President, John Mahama promised to reduce government size by appointing just 60 ministers and merging some ministries.
So far, the president has nominated three ministers, who will be vetted on January 13, 2025.
In his recent comments on ministerial appointments, Mahama indicated that although he promised a lean government, he has received numerous appointment requests. He has however reiterated his resolve to deliver on his promise.
