Newly sworn-in President, John Dramani Mahama is set to institute a committee to review the country’s education sector.
The National Education Reform Committee as it is being called, will be tasked to review the education sector at all levels. This means education at the kindergarten, basic, secondary and tertiary levels could see the introduction of a few changes a while to come.
He was speaking at the National Conventionof the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana in Winneba on Thursday, January 9, 2025. President Mahama touted the approach as an important initiative in addressing the evolving needs within the sector.
“I will set up a planning committee to start working on the National Education Review Conference that i promised. This conference will review our educational system right from kindergarten through basic to secondary to tertiary to technical, vocational education and identify what the hindrances to quality education are at each level or our educational system,” he said.
The NPP led administration has been criticised heavily for what many describe as poor work done when it comes to development in the education sector. One of its flagship programs, the Free Senior High School policy which resulted in an increase of enrollment at the secondary level was met with severe scrutiny and criticisms, as experts said it focused on quantity rather than quality.
Many parents also complained that despite not having to pay school fees due to the policy, they still had to spend huge amounts on stationaries and other provisions for their wards.
In opposition, Mr. Mahama was one of many who called for a review of the policy to curb existing issues, but this suggestion was in many ways received unkindly, as many party faithfuls of the government argued that those calling for such an approach were on a quest to erode government efforts.
During his campaign ahead of the 2024 election, President Mahama promised to review the policy and not to set it aside like many feared.
