Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a renowned medical doctor and political commentator, has asserted that the sale of state assets to politicians and politically exposed individuals is the least of the forms of state capture. He also argues that the appropriation of state resources for personal use is a more significant issue, as the state is losing much more to unscrupulous individuals through judgment debts.
He observed that individuals are prospering themselves at the expense of the state by awarding fraudulent contracts that result in substantial judgment debts.
He emphasized that this is occurring in spite of the establishment of the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) and that the country’s future may be jeopardized by the impunity with which state resources are most frequently plundered.
“We’ve lost a lot of money through the fraudulent award of contracts, even though we set up a Public Procurement Authority…I worry that this culture of impunity that is going on could, one day, lead us to where we don’t want to go,” he said on Joy FM’s current affairs show Newsfile today, Saturday, July 20, 2024.
In the meantime, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, stated on the same program that the sale of state assets did not commence during the Presidency of Akufo-Addo but has been a persistent challenge. He also noted that politicizing the issue does not assist in its resolution.
