Reports indicate that a dead man won the District-Assembly election at the Tebrebe electoral area in the Western region.
The deceased, Menasseh Sackey commonly known as Obour within the area, was the incumbent assembly man seeking a re-election before his unfortunate death while campaigning. He said to have passed away on December 5, 2023.
Mr. Sackey was also the head teacher for Aboponiso MA School.
His death churned massive support towards him, leading to a convincing win.
His wife, Vida Addison Sackey said the win despite his death is a show of love and acknowledgement of the things he has accomplished within the area.
“Yesterday was the election day, although people know he has passed on but they voted for him. That marvels me a lot. It means they love him and they cherish whatever he came to do.”
“He did a lot in his electoral area, putting people into apprenticeships; he did a lot, a lot, a lot. They appreciated whatever he came to do and they were well convinced that whether he’s dead or alive they’ll vote for him. We’re waiting for the EC, whatever the EC will say,” she told JoyNews.
However, the Electoral Officer for the area, Ekow Essien says he is compelled to call for a re-election, a directive sanctioned by law.
“The law indicates that if a candidate dies leaving only one candidate in the election, the Electoral Commission has to reopen nomination for another 10 days and reschedule the voting within 21 days.
“However, if a candidate dies and there are still more than two candidates the election can proceed as there is still a contest. So despite the unfortunate event in Tebrebe electoral area must proceed,” he said.
