At least six have been left injured in a case of chieftaincy dispute in the Gomao Obuasi community.
Among the injured is the head of the Gomoa Obuasi Asona Royal Family, Agya Amoh, who is receiving treatment at the Agona Swedru Municipal Hospital after he was reported to be in critical condition.
The chiefs and elders of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council came together to install a new chief for the Gomoa Obuasi community after five years of the community being without a chief. The farming community of over seven thousand inhabitants had been without a chief for the past five years following the death of its substantive chief.
In an attempt to bring back a sense of leadership and order, the Omanhene of the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Council, Obrempong Nyanful Akrampah, in consultation with Gomoa Obuasi authorities decided to install a caretaker chief, Kwabena Atta, for the community. This was followed by the installation of a new sustantive Chief, Nana Mbir Asomako.
According to reports, the new chief and his elders were having a meeting at the chief’s palace on Sunday February 23, 2025 when a group of youth interrupted proceedings. According to them, they support an unnamed person, who they argue is a rival candidate for the throne. They then stoned the chief, his family members and elders, with many barely fleeing the scene, resulting in at least six individuals injured. They irrate youth also vandalized the chief’s vehicles before leaving the scene.
The altercation was as a result of the caretaker chief refusing to hand over power to the sustantive chief, according to reports.
The new Chief, Nana Mbir Asomako disclosed that they were stoned for at least three hours, during which they eventually managed to escape to the police station, he told Adom News. The police have, therefore, been called upon to intensify security measures in the area.
