Ghana’s judicial autonomy has seen a momentuous reduction in the past seven years, according to data by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation.
The data revealed that from 2018 to 2023, the independence rate of the judicial system dropped significantly to 50%, having previously maintained a 100% record between 2014 and 2017.
This new data comes on the back of Vice President and presidential candidate Dr. Bawumia’s recent claim that Ghana is the 7th best governed country in the world.
Meanwhile, according to the index, impartiality of judges from 2017 to the year under review has in effect, dropped significantly to 30%, having recorded about 95% in 2014.
Moreover, this new information on the judicial system highlights existing impartiality concerns raised about the various courts, as a section of the public believe they are staffed with party faithfuls to do the government’s bidding.
The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has constantly registered its displeasure in the disposition of judges currently working under the administration of the New Patriotic Party led government. The judicial system has been named “Unanimous FC” owing to what many describe as its predicatability nature in matters that have bearings on the political sphere.
