The United Kingdom has stressed on its dedication to help maintain Ghana’s long-standing democratic practices in view of the country’s general election on December 7, 2024.
According to the British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, the commission, together with other diplomatic entities shall be deploying independent observers across the country to witness the election.
She expressed that although the commission maintains a neutral stance regarding the country’s politics, it is committed to ensuring that its democratic practices are upheld.
The British High Commissioner was delivering a speech at the commemoration of the 76th birthday of His Royal Majesty King Charles III on November 9, 2024 at the commission’s residence in Ghana where hundreds of guests were hosted.
Harriet indicated that the commission has also been worried ahead of the election, in that some people have expressed to herself and her colleagues their fears of the election being less peaceful compared to the previous one.
“Unfortunately, my colleagues and I are frequently told by a range of people that they fear Ghana’s 2024 election will be less peaceful than previous elections.
That’s worrying for everyone because an election that’s not peaceful would be incredibly damaging for Ghana, as well as dangerous of course for those directly involved. But the good thing is that politicians and others in influential positions can prevent this from happening,” she said.
Elaborating on the bilateral relationship between Ghana and Britain, Harriet said that “the UK cares deeply about Ghana’s democracy and future success because of our shared democratic values. We know that the economy and security of both our countries will be strengthened by working closely together.
“A strong bilateral partnership, rooted in learning from the past and looking to the future, has the potential to improve lives in both our nations.”
