Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, Finance Minister, has denied claims that he has authorised some payments to Kennedy Agyapong, the former Member of Parliament for the Assin Central Constituency.
It has been alleged that the Minister of Finance had authorised payment to the former MP, for a contract he had executed under the Akuffo-Addo-led government.
In a post on his social media account on X, formerly known as Twitter, the Minister of Finance stated, “Friends, since I took office, no contractor – including Kennedy Agyapong – has been paid a pesewa.”
His statement is a rebuttal to reports that the government has authorized payment to contractors including former Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, and other contractors.
According to Dr. Forson, the current administration is set on reviewing all contracts and payments, to ensure that they are legitimate. “We are currently conducting a review of all contracts and payment requests, to verify their legitimacy.”
He has advised the general public to ignore and disregard any comments regarding the issuance of payments for such contracts.
“Please disregard any claims suggesting that I have authorized payment to Kennedy Agyapong or any other contractor. Thank You,” he added.
There is no formal contract information which the former MP might have undertaken under his part, the erstwhile NPP government.
In 2023, the former legislator expressed that he had never received an contract under the NPP government since 2021. However, he did not disclose whether or not he received any contract during the first term of the NPP led government (2016 to 2020).
The closest he got to receiving a contract was in 2021, which was later cancelled by a review committee, according to Kennedy in September 2023.
“Those going around that Kennedy Agyapong has been given contracts, I met the President and told him that since 2021, with all that I have done for the NPP, I haven’t gotten any contract,”
“Ask NAPO (Minister of Energy, Matthew Opoku Prempeh), even at the Energy Ministry where I am strong (as Ghana gas board chair), I was given a contract that was torpedoed at the central tender review committee level,” he said.
It is not yet clear what he would have been paid for by the current government, in case the review of all contracts under the former administration is done.
