Queen Mother Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor of Afigya Kwabre in the Ashanti Region and Executive Director of the Obaapa Development Foundation, a non-governmental organization that works to educate and advocate for women and girls to help them become more equal and build their skills.
Nanahemaa Adwoa Awindor has told girls that if they are being forced into marriage, they should stand up for themselves.
She said girls should stand up for their rights and not give in to the pressure of their parents and guardians to get married young, while non-governmental organizations and other groups work to stop the problem.
This is what Nanahemaa Awindor said at a two-day workshop on ending child marriage in Ghana, one protocol at a time, put on by the UNFPA and her NGO to help traditional rulers improve their skills. The workshop was about ending child marriage in Ghana.
The Queen Mother also said that traditional leaders were very important in ending the problems of teen pregnancy and child marriage. She urged them to work hard to solve the problem by collaborating with other groups and law enforcement.
Through their work in education, advocacy, training, and programs, the Obaapa Development Foundation has given thousands of girls and women more power.
