The Electoral Commission’s Deputy Chairman responsible for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare has assured the general public of the commission’s resolve to provide detailed summary on its voters register by Monday October 11, 2024. This, he said the commission will do despite it not being under any obligation to do.
According to him, the EC currently is working to derive the summaries which would to be made available soon.
He added that political parties are at liberty to scrutinize all statistics pertaining to the 2024, but doing so in relation to the certified register provided by the commission.
The EC has been subjected to backlash from some political parties, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) making numerous unsatisfactory remarks following the commission’s release of its certified voter register. The NDC has vehemently called the cedibility of the register into question, requesting various specifics to be included. Some of the requested specifics include the total number of registered voters, transferred votes, constituency and regional voter populations and a proxy list.
However, in its defence, the EC, through its Chair, Jean Mensa explained that political parties bear the onus of ascertaining the said specifics themselves once the outfit releases the voter register, explaining that the EC does not bear such a responsibility.
Explaining further, Dr. Asare disclosed that the commission could not consolidate all the details prior to the release of the register, but will soon make them available.
“The Commission took it upon itself to ensure that we will provide all this data, not only at the national level but also at the regional level. We assured the parties that we would provide this information, though we couldn’t consolidate all the details initially. However, what is crucial is that the Commission has fulfilled its legal obligation by providing a certified register to the political parties, as required by law, which we did yesterday,” he told Emefa Apawu on Joy News’ Top Story on Thursday.
“If you are a party, it is your responsibility to review the document provided. You’ll find the total number registered per region, enabling you to determine the national figure. Nonetheless, the EC is committed to simplifying this process for political parties by providing summaries at both the national and regional levels. Producing these summaries requires auditing, and those processes are currently underway.”
