The Minister of Government Communications, Honourable Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has revealed that Jean Mensa, the Chairperson of the Electoral Committee, will not be removed from office based on mere criticisms made by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He elaborated that if there will be any removal, the EC Chairperson must have done an act which merits her removal, and all legal processes for that must be duly followed.
He stated, “These things are decided by law. It is not whimsical. You cannot say you don’t like Jean Mensa so she should be removed. I will not endorse that.”
Speaking on TV3’s New Day on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Mr. Ofosu emphasized that, “To be removed, you have to go through certain process. You have to do something that merits removal. That must be proven through a fair and transparent process so if that threshold is met, why not? But I am not going to say that because Jean Mensa has been roundly criticised by the NDC, she should be removed. You cannot run a country that way.”
In addressing the conduct of the President, Mr. Ofosu noted that, “President Mahama is more measured in the way that he conducts himself. He goes strictly by the book and he’s therefore not going to say because in the past we had a disagreement with Jean Mensa, then she should be insoluble. No.”
He made this statement to emphasize that the President cannot take an action merely because it has been proposed by supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His statements address a petition to President Mahama, filed by a resident in the Volta Region, to remove the EC Chairperson and her two deputies, as well as an assistant, from their office. Mr. Ofosu however, mentioned that he is yet to see those petitions.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson said he has not sighted said the petition document yet.
“I am yet to sight those petitions, so I am not able to speak to it convincingly. The point must however be made that perceptions are not enough to remove anybody,” he said.
