The former Minister for Housing, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and his administration, to not abandon the Agenda 111 which was started under former President Akuffo-Addo’s administration.
The Agenda 111 which was implemented under the Akuffo-Addo-led administration, aimed at constructing 111 district hospitals across Ghana, to improve healthcare delivery.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, March 13, 2025, after the reading of the 2025 budget, Mr. Nkrumah said, “Mr. President, we beg you in the name of God, please do not abandon Agenda 111 for political reasons.”
He expressed that should this project be abandoned, it will threaten the country’s development of healthcare infrastructure. Giving a possible outcome should President Mahama abandon the completion if these hospitals, “The millions of citizens in remote districts who are looking forward to their lives being safeguarded by this healthcare intervention will be at risk.”
Various reports reveal that only three of the 111 hospitals were fully completed before the NPP left power in 2024, however, they are not functioning properly.
According to President Mahama, his administration seeks to continue the projects by franchising the unfinished projects across the country. But Mr. Oppong Nkrumah believes it will “jeopardise the efforts of achieving a universal health coverage.”
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah encouraged the president to complete the unfinished work of the previous government and consider the Agenda 111 projects as one of national priority, and not as a political project.
He highlighted that the continuation of these projects by the current government will be to the benefit of all Ghanaians, especially those in deprived areas that lack access to proper and quality healthcare due to the unavailability of hospitals and healthcare personnel.
