The Minority in parliament has issued a press statement criticizing the conduct of the Majority during vetting proceedings involving President Mahama’s appointed ministers.
During a press conference on January 31 by the Minority caucus of Parliament, addressing the chaos and disruptions that occurred during the vetting process on 30 January, 2025, the Minority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Mr. Alexander Afenyo-Markin, stated that the NPP will stand firm and consistently hold the majority accountable regardless of their numerical disadvantage situation.
Addressing the media at Parliament on 31 January, 2025, Mr. Afenyo-Markin apologised to Ghanaians for the chaos that erupted during the vetting process on 30 January, 2025. He apologised and stated, “We assure the people of Ghana that our actions are in good faith for the good of the country and the people”.
He also addressed certain issues that have arisen during the entire vetting process by the Appointments Committee, that the actions of the current Majority, the NDC are not in the good faith of the country. He stated, “the current majority should be humble and cooperate with us the minority, and not bully us. We, the minority, are not going to allow ourselves to be bullied.”
He advised that the NDC and President John Dramani Mahama, should rethink their choice of Mr. Dafeamekpor as their Chief Majority Whip due to some conducts of his they consider inappropriate.
In addressing the attendance of the majority members to the vetting process, Mr. Afenyo-Markin mentioned that the number of attendees from the majority side is very poor. “From the start of the vetting process, the average number of majority members present for every vetting is about 92. We always count them before we start each vetting. We the minority come in our numbers to improve the attendance.”
Mr. Afenyo-Markin also addressed the performance of the Clerk to the Committee as being partisan. He said, “the clerk to the committee has shown her true colours, as being an NDC. Her actions are always to the detriment of we the minority. She should be ashamed of her position as the clerk to the committee, and as a Parliamentary Staff.” He elaborated that she always gave information to the majority without the knowledge of the minority, going against her work to be the link between the Chairman, the Majority and the Minority.
He stated that they, the minority always get to know about an important information only when it has been presented on the floor, and it is always news to them. He cautioned that, “the clerk to the committee must resign or change her posture without delay. If not, we will go all out and deal with her according to the law”.
In ending his speech, he reiterated that the Majority members should humble themselves and cooperate with them to allow the vetting process be completed smoothly. He ended by stating empathically that the current NPP is the “Mighty Few, and we will not allow ourselves to be bullied by the Majority in Parliament”.
