A 14-year-old boy in Abuesi, a community in Shama in the Western Region, has allegedly committed suicide. The deceased, John Yawson, popularly known as Egya Koyo, a Class 5 pupil of the Alliance International School in Shama, is said to have hanged himself in an uncompleted building which belongs to his father.
According to Mr. Enoch Arthur, the Assembly Member of the area, on a call on Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show on February 3, 2025, confirmed that the incident had taken place on Sunday February 2, 2025. He recounted, “I was informed of the incident so, I quickly organized my unit committee members, and we visited the scene.
“They had already taken him off the rope and sent him to the VRA hospital because they thought he was still breathing. I was told, however, that he was confirmed dead upon arrival. His father has an uncompleted building, and that is where he went to commit suicide. He climbed up the building and tied the rope to the trusses of the roof.”
Some of the residents of the community alleged that the previous day, the young boy had offended his mother, and she had denied him food as a form of punishment.
It is alleged that this decision forced him to commit the act. Residents found the body of the deceased, hanging from a rope in the uncompleted building. He further added that the boy’s father had travelled and collapsed upon hearing the unfortunate passing of his son.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been taken to St. Edward’s Morgue, while the Shama District Police Command has initiated investigations into the incident.
