Seven courts are closing down following what looks like a gradual resurgence of the Bawku conflict in the north of Ghana.
The Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has ordered the closure of the enlisted court after legal practitioners within the region raised security concerns.
A statement dated October 29, 2024 signed by the Judicial secretary said “the attention of the Honourable Lady Chief has been drawn to concerns expressed by lawyers and other Stakeholders about the current situation in Bawku and its enviorns.”
Courts to be affected include the High Court, Bolgatanga, Circuit Court, Bolgatanga, District Court, Bolgatanga, District Court, Zuarungu, District Court, Zebilla, District Court, Garu and District Court, Bongo.
The closure of these courts follows a recent violent incident on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway where eight people lost their lives during an attack by some gunmen. These gunmen had mounted roadblocks at various points and subjected passengers to interrogations. After killing the eight people, the gunmen reportedly set their bus ablaze.
Reports say the recent attack is linked to the decades-long conflict in Bawku, which seems to be resurging following a short period of calm.
