The Chief Imam of Bole in the Savannah Region, Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, has issued a directive, placing a ban on extravagant Islamic weddings.
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, the Chief Imam, of the Bole Traditional Area placed a ban on all extravagant Islamic weddings.
Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu stated that the decision was reached after several council meetings with the Islamic clergy and affects all Islamic weddings within his jurisdiction.
Extravagant Islamic weddings have become the new norm and in seeking to promote the right practice of Islam and prevent practices that hinder young people from getting married, the Chief Imam has issued a ban, stating that such weddings do not conform to Islamic practices and must be eliminated. The ban was set to be effective starting Wednesday, 5th March, 2025.
According to him, “This decision aims to curb deviant practices which set high wedding cost, therefore making it difficult for many youths to get married.”
The deviant practices specifically mentioned are lavish receptions where the couples wear multiple dresses, male beauticians dressing the opposite sex, and record dance, popularly known as ‘jams’. These practices, according to Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, do not align with Islamic traditions.
The Office of Chief Imam has called on the cooperation of all relevant stakeholders including the Paramount Chief of Bole (Bolewura), the Bole Municipal Police Commander, the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), and local media outlets, to help in the operationalization of the ban.
This ban aims at reducing the recent growing financial strain, which is associated with Islamic weddings, and to ensure that these marriage ceremonies adhere strictly to Islamic traditions.
