The leader of the Minority in Parliament, also Ranking Member of Parliament’s Appointment Committee, Alexander Afenyo Markin has issued a notice to President Mahama, expressing concern about the newly appointed Governor of Bank of Ghana allegedly assuming office without formal approval.
Following the former Governor, Enerst Addison’s decision to take a terminal leave ahead of his retirement on March 28, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama appointed Dr. Johnson Asiama as the new governor of the outfit.
Dr. Asiamah is an economist with years of experience in the field of finance, macroeconomic policy and banking supervision. He holds a doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Southampton.
On February 3, 2025, there were publications that the new governor had assumed office. Meanwhile, there have been no indications of him being officially approved, as customarily done by the Council of State.
In a letter dated February 3, 2025, the minority expressed concerns about the development, deeming it inapproriate.
“I refer to the announcement from the A.g. Spokesperson to the President, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu on the above subject and dated Frida, January 31, 2025.”
“The announcement states that the President has nominated Dr. Johnson Asiamah to serve as Governor of the Bank of Ghana pending approval by the Council of State.”
“However, Your Excellency, reports from various media houses today, Monday February 3, 2025, indicate that Dr. Asiamah has proceeded to the Bank of Ghana and, in all intents and purposes, has assumed office as Governor, engaging in meetings and official activities.”
According to him, it is concerning that “an individual who has merely been nominated-and whose appointment is still pending approval by the Council of State-has–has taken on the responsibilities of the office in the absence of such approval.”
The Minority leader said the development sets a bad precedent, saying if same were done in other areas of government such as the justice system, it would be considered inapproriate.
He has therefore called for the BoG nominee Dr. Asiamah to refrain from engaging in the said official activities until his nomination has been approved.
“It is my considered view that Dr. Johnson Asiamah should refrain from engaging in official duties at the Bank of Ghana until his nomination has been duly approved by the Council of State,” he wrote.
