The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has, again, adjourned parliamentary proceedings indefinitely as the NPP caucus fail to show up. This resulted into an order paper not being prepared to deliberate on crucial matters.
According to the speaker, the Business committee failed to meet to prepare the day’s agenda.
The NPP caucus had requested a recall of parliamentary proceedings following the speaker’s indefinite suspension of same amid a seeming power tussle between the Speaker and the supreme court regarding the former’s verdict on some four seats.
This development is being considered a setback for government, as the recall of proceedings was to address crucial matters.
Expressing his disappointment, the Speaker indicated that although there is a quorum to sit, there is no business to transact.
“Matters that they wanted us to handle, which I admitted for consideration from the business committee, are not on the Order Paper and in fact, there is no order paper for today because the business committee could not meet due to the absence of the people who requested for the recall.”
“As you can see one side of the House is completely empty. In view of this, we have a quorum to sit but we have no business before us to transact. In the absence of that, there is no other authority that can put business before you that you have not adopted to transact.”
“In view of the failure of the business committee to sit, as a result of the refusal of those who requested a recall to show up, we are compelled to once again adjourn the sitting of the house. Knowing the challenges we are facing, it is not advisable to be adjourning from day to day. So, I will proceed once more to adjourn the meeting indefinitely,” he stated.
The absence of the NPP MPs could be as a result of the NDC MPs occupying the majority side in parliament following a controversial decision on some four seats.
Speaking after the adjournment, leader of the NDC caucus, Dr. Cassiel Ato-Forson condemned the NPP’s act of not appearing in parliament desipite calling for it, accusing them of wasting public funds.
Dr. Ato-Forson has therefore, called for measures to be put in place to ensure accountability when such course of action is taken.
