Voting in the Assin North Constituency has come to an end.
The by-election has been successful without any major issues of violence. There have, however, been allegations of vote-buying by the two major political parties.
What was earlier predicted by many to be a fiercely contested by-election did not happen, as the candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Gyakye Quayson, looks to retain the seat having won in the majority of the polling centers, giving him a resounding victory.
Out of the total 99 pollen stations, Mr. Gyakye Quayson polled a total of 17,205, representing 57.4 percent of the total votes. The candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Charles Opoku, polled a total of 11,389, representing 42% of the total votes, according to StatsGH, a news portal focused on statistics.
Also, statistics show that the NPP’s Charles Opoku was touted to win the seat.
However, the Electoral Commission (EC) has yet to announce the official results.
This unofficial victory of Mr. Gyakye Quayson may place the constituency in a difficult situation as he is currently facing a court trial generated by a verdict pronouncing that the candidate during the 2020 election contested the seat while he was still a dual citizenship holder.
In the wake of the court case, the NPP capitalized on it to campaign that the NDC’s candidate would not be able to serve the constituency should he be imprisoned.
Experts warned that such a strategy could go against the NPP themselves, as the youth of the constituency might start to believe that Mr. Gyakye Quayson is being persecuted.
Meanwhile, having won the seat per provisional results, Mr. Gyakye Quayson will now also look to emerge victorious in his court trial.
