Ghanaian American Comedian and Actor, Michael Blackson has announced that he is joining the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
“Look at God, this is a very great start for all bond holders. As of today, i’m officially a member of the the NDC party,” he posted on X.
This followed a directive by President Mahama to Finance Ministry to pay an amount of GHC6.081 billion worth of coupon to bondholders as part of obligations in government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
Michael has been expressing his displeasure in the erswhile New Patriotic Party led government, in what he described as a case of corruption involving some officials of the government during the implementation of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).
According to the comedian, he was requested to pay a 10% bribe in order to retrieve his $1.2 million investment locked in Ghana through the DDEP, which he refused.
Michael has expressed his excitement about the president’s directive, through which he announced his membership of the governing party.
The announcement has come as bit of a surprise, since the comedian was seen in a post campaigning against Mahama in 2024.
“Ghana, now you might be thinking about going back to the NDC but think about this. That guy was once your president and why didn’t he win a second term? What did he not do right to win again,” he shared on X (fomerly Twitter) on April 23, 2024.
In September 2024, Michael lamented that he was facing financial challenges following the lock-up of his investment due to to it being diverted to pay national debt.
“I’m very disappointed in my people for this. Who’s the minister of finance in Ghana? I have beef with this guy…… The world can’t allow these people to and get away with it. There’s gots to be kind of consequences,” he shared on X.
The comedian has established an ultra-modern school in Ghana and was expecting to use his investment to sustain it. He expressed that the lock-up of his investment made it difficult to continue supporting the school. However “If it wasn’t for the love and passion I have for the unprivileged youth of Ghana, I would just hand my school to the people and walk away,” he said.
