Investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas is compelled to testify without his customary mask on in an ongoing legal battle against former Ghana Football Authority (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi.
Anas has become a crutcial witness in a court case titled Republic v Nyantakyi following his 2018 investigative documentary titled “Number 12” which exposed some bribery and corruption related issues in which the former GFA President is implicated.
To testify as a witness in the case, Mr. Nyantakyi argued that Anas cannot be allowed to testify with his face concealed.
But in a previous court proceeding on the case, the investigative journalist had countered that revealing his face in court could jeopardize his safety afterwards. However, the Mr. Nyantakyi insisted.
The Court of Appeal has, today Wednesday January 30, 2025 through a unanimous rule, demanded that the investigative journalist reveal his face during his testimonies in the next court proceeding on the matter.
The consitution maintains the right to a fair trial for an accused person. This, according to the court, assumes prominence over the protection principles of the witness which was invoked by the state.
This rule means that Anas, in the witness hearing episode, will have to reveal his face to the public, an act the general public has anxiously been waiting for.
Anas has been facing threats and criticisms from some top government officials and politicians for his approach in his undercover documentaries.
But while some criticise his approaches, others have expressed gratitude and admiration for his contribution towards the fight against corruption in the country.
