Kofi Boachie-Ansah, an advocate and copyright expert, has expressed dismay that a Chinese company holds patent rights to Kente designs created in Ghana.
During a one-day workshop on copyrights, the creative individual, who is also a founding member of the Audio Engineers and Producers Association of Ghana, delivered the following statement:
“What is the ownership status of the Kente designs that adorn the seats in this magnificent auditorium? Are you aware of the proprietors of the intellectual property rights to these seats?”
“It is regrettable that we were unable to register the patent rights to our name after so many years of manufacturing these Kente designs in Ghana.
“A Chinese national has now registered the claim that he holds the patent rights to these Kente designs created in Ghana, and our nation is currently undertaking measures to rectify this.”
The occasion, coordinated by Alliance Francaise in Cape Coast and Creation Africa Ghana is an initiative of the French Embassy that seeks to provide support to entrepreneurs operating within the cultural and creative sectors.
