Out of some 30 suspected miners trapped beneath a collapsed illegal mining pit at Korley Teye in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region on Monday, only five have so far been found alive.
Locals desperately tried to rescue the other miners by employing various mechanisms, but seven of the miners perished in the tragedy.
The accident is believed to have happened around 10 am, after which an eyewitness and some concerned individuals arrived around midday to help. Only the miners and other residents were actively participating in the rescue effort as of 5:30 p.m., with no formal rescue operation created in the area.
According to reports, attempts to reach the police, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and the Fire Service did not effect an urgent response.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that in an attempt to shield the incident a correspondent for Adom News was threatened not to take any photographs of the disaster, that the illegal miners did not want to attract attention.
