National Security agents have arrested three Chinese nationals and a Ghanaian for suspected illegal mining activities, popularly known as ‘Galamsey’ along Pra River (Ghana) in the Western Region.
The alleged perpetrators, whose names have been withheld, were reportedly arrested along the Pra River near Supom-Dunkwa in the Shama District.
According to the leader of the operation, Hashem Tankonu, the suspects were engaged in the illegal activity under the guise of sand winning. He disclosed they were caught with several gold washing instruments along the Pra river.
Moreover, Hashem added that they are in possession of video and picture evidence of galamsey activities involving the culprits. The suspects are said to have mounted a mining set-up behind the house they live in.

“When we got there, we collected things that we suspected were equipment for galamsey. We then took into custody three Chinese men who called their Ghanaian counterparts who were all being interrogated by the Police.
“We suspect them to be doing galamsey, and we have pictures and videos of them doing the galamsey in the house they stay in, the backyard and at the banks of the Pra River.
“So we picked some of the items and arrested them. There is also a machine on the River that we suspected was pumping muddy water back into the river because they wash the sand and we saw the washing platform too. There is a galamsey setup behind the house too that shows that they are doing galamsey,” he disclosed.

Meanwhile, while the Ghanaian suspect is said to have been released on bail after his statement was taken by the Western Regional Police Crime Office, the three chinese suspects remain in custody due to a language barrier. The police are said to be awaiting the service of an interpreter before putting the suspects on bail.
