The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a statement in reaction to Trump’s executive order signifying the United State’s withdrawal as a member state from the organisation.
Few hours after his inauguration, President Trump signed some executive orders namely; establishing that only two genders (male and female) are recognised and the immediate withdrawal of the US from the WHO, amongst others.
The US had indicated its decision to withdraw from the organisation back in 2020 on grounds of the WHO’s supposed mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic and political influence by member states. It also complained about the international organisation’s unfair “onerous payments” demands from the United States, which is “far out of proportion with other countries’ assessed payments.”
According to the US’ statement, “China, with a population of 1.4 billion, has 300 percent of the population of the United States, yet contributes nearly 90 percent less to the WHO.”
In conclusion, “this order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person,” said the statement signed on January 20, 2025.
Meanwhile, the WHO has issued a statement in response to the development, expressing regret over the decision, as it touts the impact of the US as a member State.
According to the statement by its Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the US’ participation together with other member stats has enable the organisation to implement “the largest set of reforms in its history, to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries.”
Moreover, the WHO stated that not only has America contributed to the organisation’s development, but the country’s institutions have also benefited from their membership.
It therefore hopes the country would reconsider its decision and help continue its progress.
“We hope the United States will reconsider. We look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership,” the statement said.
