Oftentimes, we hear motivational speakers, therapists and even friends, mention that writing down your thoughts in a special book, helps you to deal with certain frustrations and helps you be more appreciative.
You may be wondering if it truly helps to release your stress or tensions – in my opinion, writing your thoughts or daily activities in a book is as relaxing as speaking to a trusted person about your woes and how your day went.
One of the reasons you might want to begin keeping a journal is that writing about your experience – both good and bad, helps you to release stress and anxiety. You see those words that you wish you could have said during that argument with your boss?, the perfect place to vent that is in your journal. All those pent up frustrations of not getting a car to work or your alarm not ringing, or the uncooked lunch you had at the office, writing them down in a journal helps you to release them.
It is more like venting all your frustrations in a book and it comes with some perks – the journal will not spread your secret wishes, and you are the only one who can see it and read! Unless of course, you keep it away from prying eyes.
Keeping a journal helps you to be appreciative. There are times where things seem so distraught and bleak that you forget that there were days where everything was sunshine and rainbows. That’s where your journal comes in.
As you write about your daily experiences, you are keeping a record of the things you need to appreciate. When you read those experiences you wrote in your journal during your bleak days, you are reminded that joy comes in the morning and there is definitely no condition that is permanent. You learn to appreciate that life is a rollercoaster and as much as you are having a bad day, there will also be a better day.
You may be able to keep track of your set goals. Yes, there are those goals we usually keep in our heads and not write them down. However, studies and speakers have mentioned that when you pen down your thoughts or goals, it makes it easier for you to achieve them. Writing your goals down helps you track your growth and remember which goals you are yet to achieve.
Remember when you did not write down that shopping list, you got home only to remember that you had forgotten one important ingredient which you really need in cooking the food. Absolutely! Writing your list down helps you remember and not forget important ingredients. That’s how journaling works. You don’t forget what you wish to achieve in a few years because you can always refer to it in your journal.
Keeping a journal is not an easy behaviour you can cultivate. You might even forget to input your daily experiences on some days – that is perfectly normal. You can decide to write about those experiences when you remember them. You might just need to input the date and day for easy referral.
The art of journaling is not a chore, you just need to write those experiences down. What are you waiting for, start journaling now!
