The Minority caucus in Parliament have expressed strong objections to a house raid operation undertaken by the National Security on former Governor of the Bank of Ghana.
The caucus says the NDC led government must desist from such acts.
According to them, such raids are unlawful and are just ways of intimidating former state officials. They gave this advice during a press conference held at Parliament on March 20, 2025.
The Minority made this claim, following the raid on the home of former Bank of Ghana (BoG) Governor, Dr. Ernest Addison, where it is alleged that the security operatives stole GHS 10,000 and some jewelleries claimed to belong to the wife of Dr. Addison.
Speaking on behalf of the Minority, Afenyo-Markin, the Minority leader and Member of Parliament for the Effutu Constituency, condemned the acts of the National Security and warned that their actions are threatening Ghana’s democracy and possibilities of investors coming to the country.
He explained, “These actions undermine democracy and weaken investor confidence. If people investing in your country see these things happening to appointees, it will lead to capital flight. Even Ghanaians will not feel safe, they will withdraw from the financial sector and stop keeping their money in the country.”
He stated, “We call on the government to quickly bring a stop to these dastardly acts. These acts of intimidation and terror are relics of the past and have no place in our democracy. If they continue, people will feel the need to protect themselves, and that is dangerous.”
Elaborating on the lawfulness of such operations, the minority leader acknowledged that it is not wrong to hold an official accountable for his actions, however, in trying to make someone accountable, it is important that such processes must be done in accordance with law. He highlighted, “We are a nation of laws. Even legitimate investigations must be done in accordance with the law. We are not against accountability, but we are against human rights abuses, lawless conduct, and security excesses. These acts belong to the past and have no place in our democracy.”
According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, the Minority is tired of being intimidated by the National Security. Recounting instances where the homes of former ministers were allegedly raided without authorisation, the MP for Effutu Constituency mentioned, “We’re tired of the intimidation, the attacks and the hypocrisy. We were told that Jakpa’s first attack on Ofori-Atta was not authorised. Today, the same Jakpa, leading armed police, armed military and so-called party thugs’ parade on the streets of Accra as security operatives terrorizing and traumatizing a respected Ghanaian citizen who has dedicated the better part of his life to the service of his nation.”
In his concluding statement, Mr. Afenyo-Markin called on the President to leave a good legacy and put a stop these ongoing unlawful raids.
“I conclude, by calling on President John Dramani Mahama, we know him as a moderate politician, a respected politician. He served his country, had a first term, lost elections and the Ghanaian people have given him another mandate to do his final term which is a constitutional mandate. He should leave a legacy. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, please leave a legacy. Let it be said that even if there were exercises in the exercise of executive power when you had the opportunity, you changed it for good, and owned that legacy in your name, your Excellency,” he said.
Speculated information indicate that the raid was conducted based on suspicion of irregularities the former Governor might have committed, including the installation of a remote monitoring system that he allegedly uses to spy on activities at the Central Bank.
The minority, during its press briefing, alleged that monies were stolen during the raid. However the Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai has refuted the claims.
Furthermore, he added that the operation was duly sanctioned and it was carried out within the confines of the law, as opposed speculations that it was carried out illegally.
